[This is another segment in the Music in the Bible series which begins in Genesis and finishes in Revelation.]
16 From there they went to Beer, which is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.” 17 Then Israel sang this song:
“Spring up, O well!
All of you sing to it—
Dug by the nation’s nobles,
By the lawgiver, with their staves.” (Numbers 21:16-18)
drinking song and although it doesn't exactly apply here, I can't see any reason anywhere in the Bible where drinking alcohol is expressly forbidden when it's done in moderation. In fact, in some places it's actually encouraged! (Psalm 104:15, 1 Timothy 5:23)
Nothing refreshes better after a scorching hot trek in the desert more than a cold brew and, even though this is not what happened in this instance (or any instance), I can just imagine some enterprising person using the water for fermentation purposes to make something stronger for the journey ahead. And that's what I love most about Scripture: applying what you know about history and human nature to the bare bones of revelation that God presents. If you use your imagination, and you don't skewer doctrine, you can really have some fun sometimes believe it or not during bible study! Just don't forget to praise the Lord for the sense of humor that He gave you because, after all, you were created in His image. So wet your whistle and sing with me:
