Christian Musical Crabs in a Barrel

Is the Christian music business just like any other business? What distinguishes the players? Let me offer my humble opinion.

I'm not going to bore or insult you with comparisons to whales, sharks and other aquatic life that some like to use to describe the major and minor actors in the industry. These kind of cliché burdened debutantes who claim to be Christian but who really sit on the fence between secular and Christian music lack originality and won't last in a field that requires faith over substance. But what about your amateur musician friends and peers? Are they lifters or pullers?

Me, crabbing in Oregon

In a previous post, I quick rapped about not being yoked with unbelievers in any kind of form, especially marriage or business. And all that is Scriptural. Providentially, I had to take my own advice the very next day and cut ties with my musical partner and melody collaborator, The Blind Guitarist. He prefers to remain anonymous and I like to think the reason is that he doesn't confess Christ and is ashamed to do so or be associated openly with somebody like me who does. Very well. No hard feelings. Still praying for his salvation but I'm moving on...

When I used to promote books B.C. (Before Christ), I never encountered a professing Christian author and, unless God builds the house, the effort is in vain. Psalm 127:1 But I did learn a few things about sinful human nature and how it affects creative types. Let me share my hard earned discoveries free of charge, most of which you probably know:

1. It's a vanity thing. Eccles 1:2

2. Be over generous in your free services or sharing and you will be taken advantage of (or tried to).

3. Connections can be tentative at best with the odd exception.

4. Read the 10th commandment. Envy prevails in the arts.

Christians are supposed to be better, and so far on this journey, I find that they are. So far. But if we say we have no sin in us, we make Him a liar and His truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

Play nice, brothers and sisters. God is watching. Build each other up continually like Scripture says. Let the world end up in the place where there will be eternal weeping and gnashing of teeth and let's try by our words, music and lifestyles to show the crabs that they can make it out of the barrel without pulling others down. And above all, NEVER, EVER BE ASHAMED TO CONFESS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR! Don't drop the God to emphasize the beat!
